A Pastor's Thoughts On Addiction- January 30,2012

Nobody awakens in the morning and decides, "Yep, today's the day I will cross that
line and become addicted." No one signs up for the embarrassing, costly, and often dangerous events that happen to people who struggle with an addiction. Who would knowingly decide to 'turn left' and head for a life of fear, stigma, humiliation and hopelessness?

But, you see, that's just it – addiction almost always develops without its victim realizing what's happening to him or her. There are warning signs, sure, but they're often 'explained away', either by the person or by their well-meaning friends or family members. Hardly anyone ever thinks addiction to alcohol or drugs will happen to themselves. "Not me! I can handle it, I won't let myself lose control!" Honestly, I cringe when I hear that. Think about it: if something has to be kept  'in control', then it's already out of control.

Almost everybody knows of someone, loves someone, has been raised by someone, goes to school with someone, lives next door to someone, prays for someone , worked for someone, or buried someone, whose life has been impacted by an addiction. It's a common struggle in America, but it's very hard for people to talk about it, not to mention asking for help or for answers to questions.

Here in this article space, every week, I will write about a topic regarding addiction and recovery – from a Christian perspective. We'll explore reasons why people get tangled up with alcohol or drug problems, or even behavioral addictions such as gambling. We'll also look at what faith and the Bible have to say in answer to the chains of addiction. It was never God's intention for his beloved children to struggle with the bondage of addiction. I believe it breaks God's heart to see people suffer like that. Jesus said He came to set the captives free. I can't think of a worse captivity than being chained to an addiction.... nor a stronger Power than Jesus to break those chains.

In Christ, the way out of captivity and the strength to make that journey are made available to anyone who wants them. Imagine never being turned away for any reason when you or someone you love needs help. Jesus said the truth will set you free. Join me as we walk this path of learning and freedom. It is my prayer for you that you will find some answers to your questions.

Lovw,

Pastor Judy
